Our Community
Friends meetings hold celebrations and observances in much the same
manner and spirit as meeting for worship.
Business decisions are made in a monthly session called meeting for worship
with attention to business. These are held from
1:00 pm until 3:00 pm on the first Sunday of the month. Every member or attender
of the meeting is encouraged to attend. Decisions are reached by a common sense
of the meeting, tested in the Spirit, rather than by vote.
Marriage in the care of the meeting is celebrated in a gathering for worship
during which the couple expresses their committment and the entire assemblege
witnesses by signing the marraige certificate. Our meeting celebrates the marraige
of same-gender couples as well as opposite-gender couples. We believe that God
has blessed these unions.
Gatherings for worship are also held as memorial
meetings to celebrate the life of a departed friend.
Friends Meeting of Austin holds many activities that build and
sustain the community and Quaker identity or contribute to the
larger community:
- Quaker education for adults, youth, and children
- The Community Life committee
- Worship meetings and other regular spiritual gatherings
- Yearly Meeting
- Potluck meals
- Simple meals
- Holiday celebrations at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other times
- Spiritual retreats
- Planned outings
- Lots of informal gathering and socializing on Sundays and during
the week among groups of friends
